What does Pradosh mean?

Pradosh Vrat is observed on Trayodashi in each lunar fortnight, with the main worship performed around sunset during Pradosh Kaal. It is regarded as a meaningful time for worship of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, reflection and a prayer for forgiveness.

How should the date and time be checked?

Trayodashi and Pradosh Kaal vary by location. Consult a reliable Panchang for your own city. If you live overseas, do not use timings calculated for an Indian city without adjustment.

A simple puja sequence

  • Clean the worship area and remember Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati.
  • Light a lamp and offer clean water to the Shiva Lingam.
  • Offer bilva leaves, flowers, fruit and food with devotion.
  • Chant ‘Om Namah Shivaya’ and recite the Shiva Chalisa.
  • Conclude with a prayer for the wellbeing of family, community and all living beings.

Conduct during the fast

Food rules vary by tradition. You may take fruit or a light sattvic meal, but do not let restraint become a cause for anger or pride. Charity, service and forgiveness give the observance deeper meaning.

Pradosh worship is an opportunity to calm inner faults, anger and ego as well as perform an outer ritual.
