Core lesson
The five elements—earth, water, fire, air and space—offer a traditional vocabulary for qualities and relationships in a place. They are not substitutes for soil tests, humidity readings, ventilation calculations or fire engineering. Directional zones become useful only after orientation is reliable and when symbolic interpretation is tested against climate, function and the occupants' actual experience.
What to observe
- Use elements as interpretive qualities, not invisible physical diagnoses.
- Observe heat, water, weight, airflow, openness, sound and activity directly.
- Adjust sunlight assumptions for latitude, season and hemisphere.
- Treat the centre and zone grid as declared models, not movable conclusions.
Two vocabularies for the same room
In the traditional layer, earth can suggest support and stability, water flow and adaptability, fire transformation, air movement, and space capacity or openness. In the practical layer, record the actual materials, stored weight, plumbing, heat-producing equipment, windows, extract fans, ceiling height, sound and walking routes. Keep both layers visible so metaphor is not mistaken for measurement.
A damp corner is not corrected by declaring a water-element imbalance. First identify leaks, condensation, drainage or ventilation problems and refer persistent mould or moisture to the appropriate professional. A symbolic improvement can be considered later, but it cannot replace repair.
Zones, grids and confidence
Apply the chosen directional model to the same boundary and north reference established in lesson one. Label whether the overlay uses eight directions, sixteen sectors or a pada-based mandala. More divisions do not create more accuracy when the base plan, north or centre is uncertain.
When a room crosses several zones, record its proportion and actual functional centre instead of assigning it to whichever zone supports the preferred conclusion. Fixed plumbing, cooktops or desks can be marked as points within the room while the room itself remains a larger polygon.
- High confidence: surveyed plan and stable direction readings.
- Medium confidence: measured sketch with consistent compass checks.
- Low confidence: brochure plan, irregular boundary or conflicting readings.
Southern Hemisphere and climate reality
Direction and solar exposure are not the same variable. In New Zealand and much of the Southern Hemisphere, north-facing spaces generally receive more direct sun than south-facing spaces, opposite to a common Northern Hemisphere assumption. Season, latitude, neighbouring buildings, slope and glazing change the result further. Therefore record actual sun paths and temperatures instead of converting every daylight observation into a fixed directional rule.
A practical recommendation might be shading, insulation, ventilation or task lighting. A traditional recommendation may concern balance, use or symbolism. Name which layer produced the advice and involve a building professional for thermal, moisture or structural changes.
Worked zone note
Suppose a north-west room is described as “air-dominant” in the chosen teaching model. The observable facts are an opening window, a noisy road, cross-draft and frequent movement through the room. A careful interpretation may discuss movement and change, while practical recommendations address noise sealing, safe ventilation and furniture circulation. It would be careless to predict instability in the occupant's life from the direction alone.
Guided practice
Select four zones in a real or fictional plan. For each, write one traditional quality, three observable physical facts, one occupant question and one practical issue requiring measurement. Add a separate note for season and hemisphere.
Compare with a model answer
A strong answer does not call heat “fire imbalance” without measuring sun and equipment, or damp “water imbalance” without checking leaks and ventilation. It states the chosen zone model and uses symbolism only after observable conditions are clear.

- Elements are traditional qualities, not engineering measurements.
- Zone precision cannot exceed plan and direction confidence.
- Sunlight and climate must be assessed for the actual hemisphere and site.
- Physical hazards are repaired before symbolic balancing.
